Under the Spell editions - Meiji Jingu trees (one second edition)
On the occasion of the exhibition Movement Joints by Pau Ardid, Under the Spell and the artist present Meiji Jingu trees (one second edition), ten unique photographs made at the sacred forest in Tokyo.
Looking upwards, Ardid photographed the forest’s upper canopy in burst mode, producing ten successive images over the course of a single second. Although closely related, no two photographs are identical: the position of branches, leaves and light shifts subtly from one frame to the next, making each work unique. The trees exhibit what is known as crown shyness, a phenomenon in which neighbouring crowns leave narrow channels, rivers of sky, between one another rather than fully overlapping, allowing light to pass through. Across the ten photographs, these gaps continually reconfigure themselves. The series holds repetition and difference together: one second, one gesture, ten slight distinct images.
